Collecting Tax Debts through PAYE
From April 2012 HM Revenue & Customs will be able to collect Self-Assessment debts and Tax Credit overpayments up to the value of £2999.99 by amending the tax code of individuals in PAYE employment or receiving a UK-based pension.
Timetable
- HMRC will write to debtors/claimants between August and October 2011
- Revised PAYE coding notices will be issued from January 2012
- Debt/overpayment collection will commence in April 2012
Undue hardship
Debtors/over payers will be given the chance to contact HMRC and agree alternative methods of collection when HMRC write. They may also go to www.businesslink.gov.uk/problemspayingHMRC.
