HMRC has been allowed a budget of just under £999,660 to advertise the marriage allowance.

According to figures released to show HMRC's exceptions to the Government's current spending moratorium, HMRC needs extra cash for marketing and advertising.

It appears that fewer people are taking up the allowance than expected.

The Marriage Allowance is notoriously complicated to calculate for ordinary taxpayers and it is only worth up to £220 per year. Those who are able to transfer it are generally outside of self assessment and unaware of it. You also need to have all your partner's details to make the claim and internet access.

A good example of a tax allowance that is far more complicated to calculate than it is worth.
