From April 2019

The NLW increases from £7.83 an hour to £8.21 with NMW rates increased for lower age brackets as follows:

  • 21 to 24 year olds from £7.38 to £7.70 per hour
  • 18 to 20 year olds from £5.90 to £6.15 per hour
  • 16 to 17 year olds from £4.20 to £4.35 per hour
  • Apprentices aged under 19 or over 19 and in first year of apprenticeship, from £3.70 to £3.90 per hour

From 1 April 2018

The NLW increases from £7.50 to £7.83, with NMW rates increased for lower age brackets as follows:

  • 21 to 24 year olds from £7.05 to £7.38 per hour

  • 18 to 20 year olds from £5.60 to £5.90 per hour 

  • 16 to 17 year olds from £4.05 to £4.20 per hour

  • Apprentices aged under 19 or over 19 and in first year of apprenticeship, from £3.50 to £3.70 per hour

From April 2016

A new ‘National Living Wage’ (NLW) for workers over the age of 25 was introduced.

This started at £7.20 per hour, and the Government has pledged to increase this to £9 per hour by 2020. This new premium was added to the existing National Minimum Wage structure, and will not replace it wholesale.

The national minimum wage (NMW) previously increased annually in October.

From 1 October 2004 a minimum wage was introduced for 16 year olds who are no longer of compulsory school age and 17 year olds. The hourly rate of minimum wage is:

  • £4.00 per hour from 01/10/16 to 31/03/17
  • £3.87 per hour from 01/10/15 to 30/09/16
  • £3.79 per hour from 01/10/14 to 30/09/15
  • £3.72 per hour from 01/10/13 to 30/09/14
  • £3.68 per hour from 01/10/11 to 30/09/13

An apprentice rate for apprentices under 19 or, 19 and over in the first year of apprenticeship. The hourly rate of minimum wage is:
