From 2 May HMRC will no longer provide agents with information on their clients’ pay, tax and employment history over the phone.

The change was announced in their Agent Update April / May 2017.  In this HMRC say they have had a growing number of security issues recently in connection with such requests, including agents pretending to be clients or calling for clients where they don’t have the correct permissions.

As a result, from 2 May 2017 HMRC will no longer give out this information via their helplines:

  • Agents can call to request information, but this will then be sent directly to the client.
  • Alternatively clients can check the details in their Personal Tax Account.

HMRC do say they are working on a facility to enable agents to access this information online.  This is expected to go live later this year.
