The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has announced that the 2025 Autumn Budget will be presented on Wednesday, 26 November 2025.

Autumn budget

This year's Autumn Budget has attracted considerable speculation, most recently with the announcement this week that the cost of government borrowing reached a 27-year high.

In a video message posted to YouTube, announcing the 26 November 2025 Autumn Budget, Rachel Reeves said that, "Britain’s economy isn’t broken. But I know it’s not working well enough for working people".

She went on to say that, " ...we must bring inflation and borrowing costs down by keeping a tight grip on day-to-day spending through our non-negotiable fiscal rules. The tools to building an economy that works for you - and rewards you.  More pounds in your pocket. An NHS there when you need it. Opportunity for all. Those are my priorities."

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) will prepare an economic and fiscal forecast for publication on the same day as the 2025 Autumn Budget.

In a letter from the Chancellor to the Treasury Select Committee, the Government's intended adherence to its fiscal rules was reaffirmed. Broadly, the Government intends:

  • That day-to-day public spending, such as on welfare and public services, will be met by revenue by 2029-30.
  • Net financial debt to fall as a share of UK economic output in 2029-30.

The announcement of the 2025 Autumn Budget date came in the same week as a cabinet reshuffle, which saw James Murray becoming Chief Secretary to the Treasury, overseeing public spending. Daniel Tomlinson has become Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, overseeing the UK tax system and tax administration policy as 'Tax Minister'.
