HMRC have issued a warning about an email scam, which asks agents to update their Anti-Money Laundering (AML) supervision registration details.

phishing

HMRC’s Digital Security Working Group has reported an increase in suspicious activity, namely surrounding email scams targeting agents.

  • These emails claim to be from HMRC and ask the recipient to update their Anti-Money Laundering (AML) supervision registration details.

HMRC recommend that agents remain alert to fraudulent contact and do not click on links in emails.

  • Agents should protect themselves by accessing HMRC’s online services only through GOV.UK.

In addition, HMRC say:

  • Do not be rushed if you receive an unexpected phone call, text or email claiming to be from HMRC.
  • Before sharing any personal information, take a moment to check GOV.UK to see if the contact is genuine.

Genuine HMRC email addresses

HMRC advise that they only send emails from an email address that ends in gov.uk, such as:

  • @hmrc.gov.uk
  • @tax.service.gov.uk
  • @advice.hmrc.gov.uk
  • @updates.hmrc.gov.uk

'Gov.uk' will only feature at the end of an email address, not in the middle.
