The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is warning that VAT phishing emails are resurging. HMRC emphasises that they do not embed web links in their communications.
The message cannot be clearer: do not click links in emails unless you are 100% sure of the source of the email and you can see (from hovering over the email or checking the source) that it's a genuine email from a trusted source.
HMRC have alerted the CIOT to a 'VAT verification' email doing the rounds. The targeted emails will contain the company's name in the header and request that they click on a link asking 'Complete Your VAT Verification'.
HMRC have emphasised that they do not embed web links in emails and warn that staff who deal with VAT should remain vigilant.
