2011 has been the most interesting year in tax as well as on the economic front. Yet it seems that it has taken the spectre of a double dip recession to make MPs realise that HMRC needs proper management, control and accountability.

On the one hand the House of Commons' Treasury Select Committee has taken new measures to ensure that HMRC's deals with big business are properly scrutinised. On the other the Public Accounts Committee has pushed HMRC's Chairman into working with the tax bodies to improve efficiency.

So, I would like to propose a toast to all those who are working so hard to improve the tax system and we wish the rest of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Please read on for news, new guides and updates.

Best wishes
