Following its Business Lifecycle report in April 2018, the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) has published a call for evidence and online survey to seek views about tax as it impacts on businesses.

This review is a response to a request from the Chancellor in July 2018 and will focus on smaller businesses, who the OTS wants to hear directly from about which parts of the tax system are particularly complex and hard to get right, as they engage with tax throughout the lifecycle, from start-up and registration, through calculating and paying tax, to the cessation of/ sale of the business.

The online survey starts with a quiz asking about the number of UK small businesses, how many they employ and how much time is spent on tax compliance before moving on to questions about:

  • Co-ordination between HMRC and Companies House when starting a new business
  • The ease and speed of registering for and paying tax
  • The helpfulness of online guidance and assistance from HMRC
  • Whether you use an agent for your taxes or not.
